More Remodelers Plan Outdoor Renovations This Summer

More than two-thirds of home remodelers are planning to build open-air living rooms or other outdoor features this summer, a 70 percent increase compared to last year, according to the summer Zillow Digs Home Design Trend Report.

The report also says that summer remodeling budgets are up 100 percent since the start of 2014, with the median budget at $1,000.

As a result, many homeowners are thinking about more far-reaching outdoor remodels, such as open-air living rooms to enlarge their home’s usable space year-round and to enhance its resale value.

The top three trends of open-air living rooms favored this year by remodelers:

  • – Wood arbors, featuring greenery to create the illusion of an open-air ceiling
  • – Fully upholstered couches to provide a lounging indoor/outdoor feel
  • – Muted colors stressing subtlety rather than saturation

The Zillow Digs report is based on a survey of members of the Zillow Digs Board of Designers, made up of design experts from across the United States, as well as the most popular outdoor photos on Zillow Digs, an online center for home improvement and design support.
